Balancing diverse and repeated experiences

Kilronan is a school for children with severe learning difficulties (age 3 to 19), where each activity needs to be adapted to meet individual needs. The practical nature of many science activities means that they can be multi-sensory experiences. For example, feeling the materials for bridge making as well as testing their strength.

Kilronan School trialled TAPS Focused Assessment plans like the Bridge test and developed new TAPS-NI activities like Brown apples and Daisy footprints. Having a bank of resources helped to promote science in the school and provided ideas for similar activities for repetition to consolidate skills and/or understanding. Staff also found that the TAPS plans helped to diversify the science experiences offered to the children, so that a wider range of activities were taking place.
