Teachers at St Patrick’s Primary School in Thornaby ensure a whole school approach to science assessment by using CIEC’s document ‘Enabling Accurate Teacher Assessment in Primary Science’. https://www.york.ac.uk/ciec/resources/primary/enabling-accurate-teacher-assessment/
(Another example of a simple tracker can be found here: https://www.primary-science.co.uk/product-page/simple-assessment-tracker )
The assessment records for Years 1-6 (p16-27) can be used as printed tracking sheets or as interactive Excel spreadsheets. They enabled the teachers at St Patrick’s to track and report on pupils’ learning in science and communicate this throughout the school.
For each year group, statements highlighted in yellow indicate end of key stage ‘pupil can’ assessment statements so that every teacher can easily identify which areas of their programme of study will contribute towards a child’s final end of key stage judgement. Teachers collect evidence for these areas and then input assessments into the tracker throughout their key stage. The responsibility of the Year 2 and Year 6 teacher is to ensure that the remaining statements are taught and assessed thoroughly, as well as any gaps in learning are addressed before the final end of key stage judgement is made.
